When the shooting started in the Aurora theater this week,  Alex Teves, Matt McQuinn and Jon Blunk were sitting with their girlfriends in various parts of the room. Apparently they did not know each other, but they are now forever linked as examples of courage. (See article) Each of them chose to protect his girlfriend, using his body to protect hers from the bullets flying from a gun in the hands of a coward. Each young man gave his life to save another.

Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. (John 15:13) Jon, Matt, and Alex inspire us because they demonstrate the reality of love.

In 1 Corinthians 13, Paul instructs us that “Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” He concludes this teaching about love with, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love”

I am deeply grateful for the examples of Matt, Alex, and Jon. Thank you for your sacrifice! The world is less now that you are gone, but it is better because you acted courageously.

May your selfless act spark a revival of courage and genuine love among us who you left behind!
